High Park Fire Update: June 1 at 10:23 AM (#HighParkFire)

The High Park Fire is now at 43,433 with 5% containment.

89 Pre-evacuation alerts were just sent to residents in the area south of County Road 74E, south and east of McNay Hill. This is not an evacuation, simply a pre alert to those residents on Hewlett Gulch Road, Deer Meadow Way, Gordon Creek Lane and connecting roadways in that area.

Some containment lines were completed on the east flank of the fire yesterday. Crews will also be working on the west and south sides of the fire today to get some lines built. The east side will be monitored and reinforced today.
There will be 500 firefighters working the fire today. 26 engines are assigned to the fire today with 100 expected by tomorrow.

Air resources include:

5 Heavy air tankers
5 Single engine air tankers
4 Type 1 heavy helicopters
3 Type 2 medium helicopters
4 Type 3 helicopter
3 Blackhawk helicopters from the National Guard

Weather conditions will be warmer and drier today with shifting winds which will cause concern for firefighters.

Discussions are beginning to evaluate the current evacuations to see if some areas are safe to return. There are no specifics and no one is being allowed back in at this time.

Temporary closures at Horsetooth Reservoir, Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, and Eagle’s Nest Open Space have been extended through Thursday, June 14, 2012. Updates regarding the weekend will be released by noon Wednesday, June 13, 2012, and posted atwww.larimer.org/naturalresources
Campers who have reservations at Horsetooth Reservoir for any days June 11 – June 14, 2012, should call the reservation company at 1-800-397-7795 to change or cancel.


The 11:30 media briefing has been cancelled. There will be no media tours of the fire area until evacuations are lifted.
