Royal Gorge Fire Update: #RoyalGorgeFire


Update from Bureau of Land Management Public Information Office at 3 p.m.

The Royal Gorge Fire was reported at 1 p.m. Tuesday, south of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Arkansas River. It is estimated at more than 200 acres. The fire started on the south side of river and has spotted to the north side. The fire is actively burning on BLM, state and private lands.

Mandatory Evacuations are in effect from Parkdale to Soda Point, north of the Royal Gorge. U.S. Highway 50 is closed in both directions from Soda Point to Highway 9. Temple Canyon road has also been closed.

The Arkansas River has been closed from Spike Buck through Canon City. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park has been evacuated.

Resources on scene include: 3 BLM/USFS engines, multiple county resources, 1 BLM/USFS firefighting squad, 1 airtack plane, and 1-20 person crew, 1 hotshot crew, 1 helitack crew

Resources ordered include: 2-Single Engine Airtankers, and 1-Type 1 hotshot crew, 3-hand crews, 1-Type 3 Incident Management Team

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Evacuation Center and Shelter Information 

Red Cross is opening an Evacuation Center in response to the Royal Gorge Fire at Evangelical Free Church, 3000 E. Main St. Canon City, CO
