East Peak Fire Update: June 21 #EastPeak

Information from the East Peak Public Information Officer.

The East Peak Fire continues to grow in size with zero % containment. The fire broke out Wednesday, June 19, at 5:10p.m. The fire located near LaVeta, Colorado, in Huerfano County is now at 9,100 acres. Winds are expected out of the SW at 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Hot, dry and windy conditions will likely create critical fire weather. The smoke plume is expected to rise considerably by midday.

Approximately 20 homes remain in mandatory evacuation area and 500 plus homes are in the pre-evacuation are. So far, 26 residents have been evacuated from their homes and 177 Boy Scouts have been evacuated from the Spanish Peaks Boy Scout Ranch. Evacuees are being directed to the open shelter at John Mall High School in Walsenburg. The Boy Scouts have all returned to their homes.

Numerous resources including air support have arrived to assist with suppression efforts. No injuries are reported at this time.

There are currently mandatory evacuations in effect east of the town of LaVeta east to Hwy I-25 and south of the city of Walsenburg to the Las Animas County Line, to include the following county roads – 310, 310.1, 310.2, 312, 312.1, 313, 314, 315, 315.1, 316, 317, 317.1, 320, 330, 331, 332, 340, 341, 340.1, 344, 345,358, 359, 360, 360.1, 362,362.1, 363, 365, 365.1,365.2, Black Hawk Ranch Subdivision, Silver Spurs Subdivision and surrounding areas.

Pre-Evacuations are in effect from south of the town of Aguilar to the city limits of Trinidad and east to I-25. The city of Walsenburg including Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is also under pre-evacuation. To date, 9 structures and 4 out buildings have been lost.

The LaVeta Fairgrounds (4-H Barn) are currently accepting large and small animal evacuees. If assistance is needed to evacuate animals contact 719-315-4808. Documentation on animals is suggested, such as pictures, vet records, and medications.

A news conference is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. today LaVeta Fairgrounds, located on Moore St.

The new location for the East Peak Fire community meeting this evening, June 21, 8pm will be at the Walsenburg Community Center 928 Russell Ave.
