Colorado Winter Weather Awareness Week October 21-27

WHEREAS, Colorado has experienced the physical and emotional consequences - suffering and damages to property and loss of life - caused by severe winter weather; and

WHEREAS, avalanches in Colorado have claimed the lives of hundreds of individuals over the past several decades - more than in any other state; and

WHEREAS, the leading causes of death associated with winter weather are hypothermia, exhaustion, and automobile accidents; and

WHEREAS, emergency preparedness is a responsibility of government that depends on the leadership of elected officials and the efforts of informed citizens, volunteers, and government employees; and

WHEREAS, experience has demonstrated that an informed and prepared citizenry and organized disaster emergency team can help the public to better cope with and survive the effects of severe winter weather;

 Therefore, I, John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim October 21-27, 2012,

Operation Vortex: State EOC Activated for Exercise

The State Emergency Operations Center was activated this morning at 9 a.m. as part of Operation Vortex.

Operation Vortex is a full-scale exercise.  The focus of the exercise today is recovery.

This is an EXERCISE only and is not related to the on going Jessica Ridgeway investigation in Westminster, Colorado.

Colorado Wildfire Report: October 11

Fern Lake Fire

Fire Jurisdiction: Rocky Mountain National Park Land

Location/County: Rocky Mountain National Park - located west of the Fern Lake Trailhead
Cause: No report at this time

Acres: 660 Acres

Containment: 0% as of noon today.

Evacuations/Closures: Currently, Bear Lake Road, Upper Beaver Meadows Road and Moraine Park Campground are closed. In addition, to ensure visitor safety and to protect park resources, all park trails accessed from Bear Lake Road and Highway 66 have been closed, as are trails south of Trail Ridge Road including the Ute Trail. Trail Ridge Road remains open.

Fatalities/Injuries: None reported

Structures Lost/Damaged: No structures are threatened at this time.

Significant Events: Fire fighting efforts are focused on containing the fire inside park boundaries north of Glacier Creek, west of Hollowell Park and south of Trail Ridge Road. Containment efforts also include the coordination of strategic water drops and the planning of long range fire suppression tactics.

State Emergency Operations Center is activated to support Exercise Operation Vortex #ExVORTEX

The State Emergency Operations Center is activated to support the North Central Region Exercise Operation Vortex today, October 11, through tomorrow.

This is an exercise involving multiple local entities including Denver County, Arapahoe County, Adams County, West Metro Fire Training Center, Denver International Airport and Longmont United Hospital.
