DHSEM Assisting South Region with Storm Recovery

The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is supporting several counties in the South Region of the state as they recover from severe winter storms this week. Several counties in the South Region including Pueblo, Huerfano and Las Animas face impacts from the storm including power outages and storm damages. 

 

DHSEM Support

The State Voluntary Agency Liaison Officer Robyn Knappe and the South Central Field Manager, Christe Coleman are mobilized to coordinate the following support:

 

Community Information Line: 2-1-1

Individuals with damage or facing power outages in Pueblo, Huerfano or Las Animas counties should call 2-1-1 for assistance.

Support available through 2-1-1 Call Center includes the following:
  • Connection to Resources
  • Non Emergent Medical Support
  • Report Damages
    • Information needed on storm damage and insurance information
  • Debris Management
    • Assistance with covering damaged roofs and minor roof repairs

 

Other Resources and Support

  • Southern Baptists are providing a generator.
  • Salvation Army is providing hot meals in the Town of Aguilar.
  • Team Rubicon is helping cover roofs

Huerfano County Flood Update: Spanish Peaks Flood II

Summary of Flood

  • A flash flood was reported to the Huerfano County Dispatch at approximately 9:45 p.m. at the Scout Ranch in Huerfano County.
  • 151 scouts, including staff have been evacuated to Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. Red Cross on site.
  • Five people were treated for minor injuries at Spanish Peaks Regional Hospital. Structure damage unknown. 
  • Jurisdiction:   Huerfano County

Upper Bear Creek Flood: Huerfano County, Colorado: July 8, 2014 at 1:45 p.m.

A flash flood moved through the East Peak burn scar early Tuesday morning. The call was received at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Ninety-six scouts including troop leaders from the Kansas and Colorado area were evacuated to Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. The Red Cross provided meals and shelter for evacuees. County Rd. 340 at the Shangri La entrance was closed for several hours and is now open. Evacuations orders have been lifted and the scouts have re-entered the ranch.

Black Hills Fire Update: June 25

Summary of Black Hills Fire

A fire is burning in Huerfano County approximately 10 miles northwest of Walsenburg in rugged terrain on the Major Ranch subdivision.  The fire was reported to the Huerfano County dispatch at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Size-up Information

The fire has burned approximately three acres and is 0% contained.

Cause

Unknown cause at this time, however, lightning has been reported in the area.
