FEMA Registration Deadline Extended for Disaster Survivors in Colorado

The deadline to register with FEMA has been extended to December 2, 2013 because of the long Thanksgiving weekend.

There are now two weeks remaining to register with FEMA. December 2 is also the new deadline to complete and return U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan applications.

Survivors who register may be eligible for federal grants to help cover various disaster-related expenses, including rent, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

The extension is for all 11 Colorado counties designated for federal Individual Assistance: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Clear Creek, El Paso, Fremont, Jefferson, Larimer, Logan, Morgan and Weld.

People living in these counties who sustained losses due to storms and flooding should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. Applying by the deadline may help survivors avoid a funding shortfall if they later find that they are underinsured or have additional damages.

Under the SBA disaster loan program, homeowners may be eligible for as much as $200,000 in loans to repair or replace their storm-damaged primary residence. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for as much as $40,000 for replacement of personal property. Businesses and private nonprofits may be eligible to borrow as much as $2 million to repair or replace storm-damaged property.

Small businesses and most private nonprofits may also be eligible for Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

Register with FEMA by phone, 800-621-3362, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., MST, seven days a week. Multilingual phone operators are available on the FEMA helpline. Choose Option 2 for Spanish and Option 3 for other languages. People who have a speech disability or are deaf or hard of hearing may call (TTY) 800-462-7585; users of 711 or Video Relay Service can call 800-621-3362.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private, nonprofit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. For information about SBA programs, applicants can go to sba.gov/disaster or call (800) 659-2955 (TTY 1-800-977-8339).

Federal/State disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

More than 24,000 Coloradans have contacted FEMA for help or information and more than $40 million in total individual assistance grants has been approved.

Survivors who have registered with FEMA and received a loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are urged to complete and return the application. Some types of FEMA aid are limited to applicants who did not qualify for a SBA disaster loan. Generally, SBA low-interest loans are the primary source of federal disaster assistance to help survivors fully recover. No one is required to accept a loan.

SBA has approved more than $16 million in loans for Colorado homes and businesses.

The deadline to return the SBA application is Nov. 14, the same as the deadline for registering with FEMA.

SBA assistance includes:
  • Home Disaster Loans – Loans to eligible homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate or personal property. Renters are eligible for personal property losses, including automobiles.
  • Business Disaster Loans – Loans to eligible businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size may apply. Certain private, nonprofit organizations may also be eligible.
  • Economic Injury Disaster Loans – Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, nonprofit organizations. The loans are intended to meet their ordinary financial obligations that cannot be met because of the disaster. The deadline for economic injury loan applications is June 16, 2014.
